Fairfield Lions depth stands strong in win at Mason County

The depth of the No. 1 state-ranked Fairfield Lions boys cross-country team stood strong on Saturday afternoon by winning the Mason County (Ky.) Invitational without five runners on their roster, some of whom are usually the Top 7 finishers for FHS.
The Lions were without their top two runners for the season in seniors Matthew Mangus and Noah Richmond, plus they didn’t have Andrew Davis, Brandtson Duffie or Sam Buddelmeyer available to race.

For this past week, at least, the Lions used their depth to take home their fourth win of the season, with four runners finishing in the Top 20. Sophomore Ethan Davis raced to a 12th-place finish at 17:16, followed by junior Bennett Hodson in 13th place at 17:18.80.
In 18th place for FHS was junior Austin Setty at 17:34, and in 20th place was freshman Cohen Frost at 17:45.60. Also for the Lions, freshman Blake Haines was 28th place at 18:02.50.
Others to finish for the Lions were sophomore Gavin Campbell (19:24.20), freshman Brant Haines (20:03.90), junior Riley Friend (26:52.30) and freshman Orrie Friend (29:38).
FHS won with a score of 91, followed by Bishop Brossart (Ky.) in second place at 123. In all, there were 24 schools in the event.
The Fairfield Lady Lions were 13th overall in the girls race on Saturday. Their highest finisher was sophomore Ciara Colwell in seventh place at 20:16.80. Senior Chloe Barber was 42nd overall at 22:21.40.
Other FHS finishers were junior Megan Gragg (23:22), junior Meadow Cunningham (28:10.40), sophomore Sarah Wuellner (28:49.90) and sophomore Ailean Duffie (28:52.80).
Winning the girls race was Mason County with 106 points.
