Fairfield Lions cross-country headed to D-III State Championships

The Fairfield boys' cross-country team made school history Saturday by qualifying for the Division III Cross-Country State Championships.
FHS finished with a third-place finish in the Region 11 Championship held at Pickerington North High School, as the team becomes the first cross-country team in school history to achieve the honor of qualifying for the state meet.
On a very cold and blustery Saturday afternoon, the Lions were led by senior Michael Mangus, who placed sixth with a time of 16:39. Mangus was followed by senior Blake Hildebrant, who placed 11th in a time of 17:01.
This is the third time both Mangus and Hildebrant have qualified for the state cross-country meet.
Freshman Wyatt Evans was 32nd at 17:48, and freshman Trent Swisher was 52nd with a time of 18:16.
Junior Dustin Willey placed 56th at 18:25 and was followed by freshman Mason Cain in 89th (19:34) and junior Matthew Leach, who was 92nd (19:58).
The top four teams and the top 16 overall individual finishers all qualified for the State Meet, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 2 in Hebron at the National Trail Raceway. The team will compete in the Division III boys race at 1:30 p.m.
Mangus and Hildebrant have been named Academic All-Ohio Cross-Country. This award goes to State Meet qualifiers who have a 3.50 GPA or higher.
