Fairfield Lions baseball wins over Williamsburg
The Fairfield Lions were back on the baseball diamond Saturday, defeating the visiting Williamsburg Wildcats in non-conference play by a 2-1 score.
Fairfield didn’t waste any time, taking the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Klay Walker was first to round the bases for the host Lions to gain the advantage. He initially reached first base on an error, then he and the Lions made the visitors pay for the miscue. Walker moved to second base, eventually scoring on a two-out single by Sam Buddelmeyer for the 1-0 lead.
FHS added to their lead in the fourth inning. The run-scoring inning began with Tucker Ayres taking first base of a lead-off single. Ayres moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Austin Setty and advanced to third base on a passed ball. Ayres made it a 2-0 lead for the Lions over the Wildcats on another sacrifice bunt, this time by Andrew Dingey.
Williamsburg scored their lone run of the game in the top of the seventh off a lead-off home run by Carter. The Wildcats had two more players reach the bases in the top of the seventh, but the Lions ended the game by recording outs on a strikeout, a fielder’s choice and the third out came between third base and home plate.

The Lions collected four hits and four walks in the victory. Gaining hits in the win for FHS were Cody Gragg, Buddelmeyer, Ayres and Setty. Walks were forced by Mathew Spears (two), Ayres and Jacob Bowman.
FHS used three pitchers in their one-run win over Williamsburg. Starting the game and earning the win was Ayres. He pitched 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on one hit and no walks. He threw 36 pitches and finished with one strikeout.
Spears pitched four innings of relief. In his time on the mound, Spears threw 52 pitches, allowing one run (earned) on one hit. He also walked two and struck out three. Buddelmeyer earned the save by pitching two-thirds of an inning. He allowed no runs or walks and just one hit on nine pitches.
The win moves the Lions to 3-1 overall, and they are scheduled to play again on Monday, April 17 at Peebles with a 5 p.m. start in Southern Hills Athletic Conference play. On Tuesday, April 18 at 5 p.m., the Lions are scheduled to host the Whiteoak Wildcats in SHAC action.
