Fairfield Lions 4x800m relay team headed to state

The Fairfield Lions 4x800-meter relay track and field team stamped their ticket to the OHSAA State Track and Field Championships next week with a Top 4 finish in the 2016 Division III Regional Championships held at Fairfield Union High School.

Fairfield’s 4x800m relay team consists of Brandtson Duffie, Trent Swisher, Matthew Mangus and Noah Richmond, with the group earning their state bid with a fourth-place finish at the regional event with a time of 8:26.35.

For Highland County teams taking part in Day One of the two-day event, the 4x800m relay team of the Lions was the lone state qualifier on Wednesday. Track and field athletes from Fairfield, Lynchburg-Clay and Whiteoak took part in the event.

Whiteoak junior Derrick Ison, who qualified for the state meet last year, raced his way to the finals in the regional 400m dash, finishing with a time of 51.98, a sixth-place finish. He will race in the finals Friday, as racers who place in the Top 4 will qualify for state.

The meet will resume on Friday with Bailey Leininger of LCHS to participate in the discus throw for the girls event. The boys will have racers in the 1600m run, 800m run, 3200m run and the 400m dash finals.

There were others who raced in various events on Wednesday at the regional final at Fairfield Union from Highland County:

Boys:

• 100m dash: Derrick Ison (WHS) — 14th, 11.92; 200m dash: 15th, 24.79.

• 300m hurdles: Nate Buchanan (FHS) — 14th, 44.96.

• 4x100m relay: Yancy Wisecup, Deavon Haynes, Nick Price, Wyatt Fent (FHS) — 10th, 47.42.

• 4x200m relay: Dustin Huff, Fent, Haynes, Price (FHS) — 14th, 1:38.70.

• 4x400m relay: Wyatt Evans, Bennett Hodson, Duffie, Swisher (FHS) — 11th, 3:48.14.

• 4x800m relay: Brandon McCammon, Ben Bales, Hunter Underwood, Bobby Merry (LC) — 15th, 9:21.86.

• High jump: Zac Carter (LC) — 6th, 19-03.75.

• Discus: Johnny Lewis (LC) — 138-05.

Girls:

• 4x200m relay: Taiyler Marcelino, Alexa Cochran, McKayla Binkley, Angela McLaughlin (LC) — 14th, 1:52.78.

• 200m dash: Angela McLaughlin (LC) — 13th, 28.03.

• 4x400m relay: Cochran, Binkley, Abby Blankenship, McLaughlin (LC) — 13th, 4:23.47.
