Fairfield Lady Lions shut out visiting Washington

LEESBURG — The overall play of the Fairfield Lady Lions is improving as the tournament gets closer, and on Tuesday night at Fairfield High School, the Lady Lions had one of their best games of the season, winning 10-0 over the visiting Washington Lady Blue Lions.
In the non-conference showdown, the Lady Lions led 6-0 against the Washington Lady Blue Lions at halftime, with the first goal of the match coming off a kick from Ella Newkirk, with the assist by Molly Thackston with 33:33 on the clock for the early 1-0 advantage.
Newkirk added a second goal with the assist by Mackenzie Williams with 21:19 on the first-half clock for a two-goal lead. The lead went to three goals with 13:47 left in the half off an unassisted goal by Williams.

Fairfield made it a 4-0 lead with Hallie Haines scoring a goal with the assist from Kara Gleadle with the clock reading 10:58. FHS continued their scoring with a goal from Hailey Tolle off a penalty kick for a five-goal advantage. The sixth goal of the first half came from Cadence Saunders with 2:54 left in the half for a six-goal advantage.
The second half began with Saunders scoring her second goal with 22:18 remaining in the match, with the assist by Tolle. The next goal was scored by Tolle with the assist by Newkirk and Saunders with the clock reading 16:24.
Saunders scored her third goal of the match for the hat trick with the assist by Haines for a 9-0 lead with the clock reading 11:38. The final goal of the match came with an unassisted goal by Newkirk, as she also had a hat trick with 14 seconds left in the match.
“Quite honestly, I wished the girls that showed up tonight were the ones who have been showing up all season,” FHS head coach Sam Spargur said. “They have the talent, and I think they are starting to come through. We changed our formation a little bit, and they are just starting to come together.
“All of the girls played well. We changed our formation earlier against Fayetteville, and they kind of fought me over it. This game here, they finally accepted it and played it like they should.”
The Lady Lions of FHS will next play on Thursday, Oct. 10 vs. Fayetteville. Fairfield’s SHAC match with Peebles for Friday, Oct. 11 has been canceled.
The Fairfield girls will play in the sectional round of the Division III tournament on Saturday, Oct 12 at West Union with an 11 a.m. start.
