Fairfield Lady Lions have 16-match SHAC win streak snapped by Peebles

LEESBURG — Playing on back-to-back nights, following a 12-day break in game action, the Fairfield Lady Lions played close for most of their Southern Hills Athletic Conference match against the visiting Peebles Lady Indians but were unable to gain the match win, seeing their 16-match conference win streak snapped in the process as well.
Last season, the Lady Lions won the SHAC championship with a 14-0 conference record, but on Wednesday night a win wasn’t in the books for the defending conference champion Lady Lions as they lost in four sets to a strong and athletic Peebles squad.
Peebles won the match by taking the first set by a 25-15 score, but Fairfield rallied back with a 25-15 set two win of their own. In set three, Peebles answered with a 25-14 win, and in the fourth, though they tried to make a final comeback effort, Fairfield dropped the set to Peebles, 25-20.
The loss moves Fairfield to 2-1 in SHAC play this season, and 7-2 overall. Peebles is now 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the SHAC.

In the first set of the night, Peebles built a lead of 19-10, with their 19th point coming from a hit by Jacey Justice. That lead eventually turned into a 21-12 lead for the visiting team with another play at the net by Justice. Later, Fairfield’s Peyton Magee scored a point for the Lady Lions, but FHS still trailed by 10 points.
A serve by Taylor Lawson, and a play at the net by Gracie Lawson, made it a seven-point deficit at 21-14. After the Lady Lions gained their 15th point of the first set, Peebles scored the next four with a point off a serve by Justice, and the 25th point came off a hit at the net by Harlee Wilkinson.
Fairfield’s best set of the night was up next, and they scored the first point off a hit by Faith Miller. The set score eventually read 4-3 at the Grandle Gymnasium when Layla Hattan gained a kill against Peebles.
Later, the score was tied at 5-5 as Fairfield’s Taylor Lawson scored a point, but the next four points were scored by Peebles with points from Tatum Arey, Hope Brown and Wilkinson, forcing FHS to call a timeout.
That timeout called by Coach Lesley Hattan worked for Fairfield because they returned to action a stronger squad and tied the score at 9-9 off a hit by Magee, and before that, points from Jaden Smith, Hattan and Miller helped get to the tied score.
Fairfield took a 10-9 lead off an ace by Miller, but Peebles came back to tie the score at 10, and in an instant the score was later tied at 11, 12, 13 and 14 points.
A serve by Emma Fouch later pushed the Lady Lions ahead at 18-14, and as the set continued, the home team built a 20-15 lead following a point scored by Hattan. Fairfield continued to keep the lead, with the 25th point of the set scoring as Magee pushed the ball over the net past Peebles players for the 25-15 set two victory.
Peebles jumped out to a 6-0 lead in set three, only to see that lead move to 10-3 and later 15-5 following a point scored by Justice, and the point before that was tallied by Trey. Hattan had an ace for FHS to get the Lady Lions back to within four points of Peebles at 16-12, but in the end Peebles was too much in the third set, ending it with back-to-back points scored off serves by Christian Reed.
The fourth set saw PHS win by a 25-20 score, but it was a tough set win as the score was tied at 5-5 and later at 10-10. As the set went on, Peebles built at 20-13 lead, but the Lady Lions tried to battle back later with points from Hattan and Miller, but in the end, Peebles eventually scored the final set and match point for their SHAC win.
Next for Fairfield is another SHAC match, as this time they will be facing the West Union Lady Dragons at FHS with a 5 p.m. JV start on Friday, Sept. 13.
