GREENFIELD — The Fairfield Lady Lions opened the 2017 soccer season with a convincing 6-0 shutout over the McClain Lady Tigers in Greenfield, Monday night.

Senior Shay Turner had an outstanding all-around game for the Lady Lions, scoring three goals (hat-trick), and freshman Alexia Sheppard was also impressive with two goals.

Sheppard scored Fairfield’s first goal at the 32:13 mark, and Turner added a pair also in the opening period. Senior Ashley Moore scored another first half goal at the two-minute mark, giving the Lady Lions the 4-0 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Shepard and Turner each scored one goal, giving Fairfield the six-goal non-conference win over McClain.

“This was a great way to start the season off,” Fairfield coach Paij Shelton told The Highland County Press. “I thought we won almost all the 50-50 balls and controlled the possession of the ball all night.”

McClain head coach Shawn Peterman thought the heat might have had some effect on his team’s sluggish first game of the new season.

“I think the heat took a toll on us (Monday), and we obviously didn’t execute our game plan,” Peterman said. “Fairfield played very well and came over here and did what they needed to do to win.

“Tomorrow’s another day, and we’ll come to practice and fix the things we need to and hopefully go to Jackson next Tuesday and get a different result.”
