Fairfield breaks skid with win over Manchester

On the banks of the Ohio River, the Fairfield Lady Lions broke their three-game skid by defeating the Manchester Lady Greyhounds, 9-3 in Southern Hills Athletic Conference play.
The Lady Lions pounded out eight hits en route to their six-run come-from-behind victory to improve to 10-8 overall and 7-3 in the SHAC. MHS falls to 2-8 in the SHAC and 4-10 overall.
Arica Melson picked up her 10th win on the season, as the Lady Lions defense also made some stellar plays on the field, including two double plays and a running catch in centerfield by Courtney Huff.
Melson (10-5) pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and five walks. She finished with five strikeouts.
MHS dented the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, taking an early 2-0 lead.[[In-content Ad]]
As has been the case many times before this season, the Lady Lion offense answered the very next inning, as with one out in the top of the second inning, Heather Sanderson drew a base on balls.
Cynnamon Sova-Davy had an infield single, advancing Sanderson to second base. Sirenity Smith was safe on a fielder’s choice, but Sanderson was forced out at third base. Huff (2-for-3, triple, two stolen bases, two runs, two RBIs) tied the score with one swing of the bat, hitting a frozen rope over the centerfielder’s head for a triple. Standing on third base with two outs, Huff stole home to give her team a 3-2 lead.
FHS scored three more runs in the top of the fourth inning, manufacturing three runs on a lone single by Smith. MHS answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 6-3.
Melson and the Lady Lion defense shut out MHS the rest of the way on only one hit.
FHS took a commanding 9-3 lead with three more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Sova-Davy led off the inning with a double, just over the bag at third base. One out later, Huff had an infield single to advance Sova-Davy to third base. Kaitlin Evans singled to the left side of the infield to score Sova-Davy, advancing Huff to second base.
Huff and Evans pulled off a double steal of third and second base. Huff scored on a wild pitch with Evans taking third. Smithson followed with a line drive single to centerfield to drive in Evans.
FHS travels to Fayetteville on Saturday morning to take on the first-place Fayetteville Lady Rockets with the game, starting at 11 a.m.
