Fairfield baseball wins by one run over Fayetteville

Scoring four runs in the first three innings and one more in the fifth allowed the Fairfield Lions to defeat the Fayetteville Rockets, 5-4 in Southern Hills Athletic Conference action Tuesday night.
The Lions (8-3, 10-6) totaled six hits with Matthew Spears going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Also gaining a hit for the Lions were Cody Gragg (1-for-3, Sam Buddelmeyer (1-for-3, one run), Layne Morgan (1-for-3, two runs) and Ethan Grooms (1-for-2, one RBI). Also for Fairfield, Wyatt Willey had one RBI.
As for the Fayetteville Rockets, they scored one run in the top of the first, two runs in the fourth and one run in the seventh.
Buddelmeyer pitched a complete game for the win as he pitched seven innings, allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits and eight walks. Buddelmeyer finished with one strikeout.
“I’m proud of our guys. I thought we were more focused (Tuesday) than we were against Hillsboro the game before,” FHS head coach Jeremy McGraw said. “Sam did a nice job on the mound, and he had a big fifth and sixth inning shutting down the top of their lineup.
“Wyatt Willey with two strikes and Ethan Grooms with two outs came up with big RBIs in the third and fifth innings. Those are the things we look for out of our guys … good disciplined at-bats.”
