Fairfield 8th graders win SHAC DII championship

The eighth grade Fairfield boys clinched the Southern Hills Athletic Conference Division II championship with a 44-25 win over Manchester.

This marks back-to-back SHAC Div. II championships by the eighth graders.

Austin Setty led the Lions with 11 points, with Sam Buddelmeyer following with 10 points.

The Lions connected on three 3-pointer attempts with Setty, Issac Chambers and Bennett Hodson each making one.

The Lions out-rebounded the Greyhounds, 29-17 while collecting 16 on the offensive side, with Buddelmeyer snatching 8 rebounds.

The Lions defensive pressure caused Manchester to turn the ball over 23 times, while the Lions only committed 12.

"We take great pride in our defense, we like to pressure full court the whole game to wear our opponent down in the second half, and we caused them to play a different style than what they wanted to play," FMS eighth grade coach Matt Hodson said. "We like to speed the other teams up.

"These boys could care less who scores the most points on our team. At the end of the game, they want to know how many turnovers the other team had. If they don't have the number we put on the board before the game, they are disappointed in themselves."

For the season, the Lions are 13-1 overall and 10-1 in the SHAC, with their lone loss coming to the Eastern Warriors.

They have outscored their competition 48.7-29.5 this season, while causing an average of 23 turnovers per game to their 14 per game. FMS also out-rebounded their opponents by 10 per game.

"These boys are so driven. They set goals at the beginning of the season, and this one was of them to win the league," Hodson said. "We still have two league games left, and we need to win them to have a shot at the No. 1 seed in the league tournament."
