Dominant first quarter sets tone in Fairfield loss to Washington

LEESBURG — In a non-conference battle between two Lady Lions teams, the Washington Lady Blue Lions gained the upper hand early and played excellent team basketball both offensively and defensively to defeat the host Fairfield Lady Lions, 68-23 Wednesday at Grandle Gymnasium.
The game’s pace was set in the first quarter as the Washington Lady Blue Lions opened with a 9-0 run and led by a 20-1 score at the end of the first frame as they got the hot hand in the opening frame.

Washington was led by Hannah Haithcock with 20 points, followed by Shawna Conger, who totaled 16 points. Haithcock’s points came from seven two-point field goals, one 3-pointer and going 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Conger had four two-point baskets, two 3-pointers and was 2-of-3 in her free-throw attempts.
Also in double figures for the Washington club were Bre Taylor with 12 points and Rayana Burns with 10 points. Taylor totaled five two-point baskets and was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. Burns finished with three two-point field goals and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Fairfield was led in scoring by Samara Cannon with eight points, all scored in the first half, including a 3-pointer in the second quarter. Next were Molly Thackston and Braylynn Haines with four points each.
As for the opening frame, Washington gained the lead with the aforementioned nine-point run with seven points from Haithcock and a two-point jumper from Tabby Woods.
Fairfield’s lone point in the first quarter was a free-throw conversion by Cannon. From that point forward, Washington ended the first with 11 consecutive points as Haithcock, Conger and Burns contributed to the scoring, including a 3-pointer from Conger with 2:02 left in the opening frame.
Washington’s scoring run went into the second quarter as Conger opened the frame with a 3-pointer at the 7:35 mark for a 23-1 lead over FHS. The Lady Lions stopped the run with a two-point field goal by Cannon with the clock reading 7:25 left in the opening half.
After two more points from Washington, it was Cannon again who scored points, sinking a 3-pointer. Washington eventually built their lead to 33-10 with 2:13 remaining in the quarter, but FHS came back with a basket by Lauren Arnold and later two free throws from Haines.
At the end of the first half, Fairfield trailed by a 37-14 score as Washington won the quarter at 17-13.
The third frame was mostly Washington as they outscored Fairfield 25-7 for a 62-21 lead. WCH won the fourth frame, as well as scoring was scarce at 6-2.
Scoring points for Washington in the third were Burns, Taylor, Conger and Haithcock. Fairfield’s seven points came off a 3-pointer by Emma Fouch and four points from Thackston.
In the fourth, Trinity Huff scored two points for FHS. For the game, Fairfield totaled 20 turnovers
Next for the Fairfield Lady Lions is a game Saturday, Dec. 22 at Portsmouth Clay with a JV start of noon.
