Dettwiller earns 100th varsity coaching win; Fairfield Lady Lions defeat Eastern

The Fairfield Lady Lions completed their sweep of four Southern Hills Athletic Conference opponents this week with a 7-0 shutout victory over the Eastern Lady Warriors in impressive fashion, as the victory marked the 100th career varsity coaching win for Coach Mark Dettwiller beginning just his sixth year at Fairfield.
Again, the Lady Lions were dominant in their victory with outstanding pitching, defense, hitting and base running. Senior Kaiti White pitched a two-hit shutout – her fourth of the season – while striking out nine Eastern batters.
As expected, the game was scoreless after two complete innings, but the Lady Lions erupted for five big runs in the top of the third inning. Beginning with one out, Halle Hamilton drew a walk and Lyndee Spargur followed with a single up the middle. Megan Gragg knocked in Hamilton with a single past the shortstop and White singled home Spargur. Hattan knocked in Gragg with a ground ball out to the right side of the infield. Lauren Arnold stepped to the plate and launched a towering home run over the left field fence knocking in Harley Flint running for White.
Fairfield added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Again, with one out, Hamilton singled up the middle. Spargur was then safe on error, and both Hamilton and Spargur advanced to third and second on a wild pitch. Hamilton scored on a wild pitch, and White knocked in Spargur with an infield hit.
Fairfield’s Gragg and White singled in the top of the seventh inning, but were left on base.
After Eastern’s Madilynn Murphy doubled to right centerfield to lead off the bottom of the third inning, White and the Lady Lion defense retired the last 15 Lady Warriors in order, while also striking out seven batters.
Leading hitters for the Lady Lions included: Spargur (1-for-4, two runs), Gragg (2-for-4, one run, one RBI), White (3-for-4, one run, two RBI), Hattan (0-for-4, one RBI), Arnold (2-for-3, home run, one run, two RBI), Taylor Lawson (1-for-4), Hamilton (1-for-2, double, two runs).
Andrea Edminston singled and Madilynn Murphy doubled for Eastern.
White (7-0) was the winning pitcher for Fairfield. She pitched seven innings, allowing no runs on two hits and no walks, while finishing with nine strikeouts.
The Fairfield Lady Lions will host a tri-match on Saturday morning. Fairfield will play the Piketon Lady Redstreaks at 11 a.m. and the McClain Lady Tigers at 3 p.m.
