Cohen Frost places on podium; Fairfield Lions finish 9th overall

HEBRON — Back at state for the seventh consecutive year, the Fairfield Lions didn’t disappoint at the OHSAA Division III State Championships at National Trail Raceway, with two All-Ohio honorees and a ninth-place team finish.
The Lions proved many wrong again on Saturday afternoon as they held strong and saw junior Cohen Frost reach the podium with a 16th-place finish, while senior Ethan Davis was 21st overall for All-Ohio honors. As a team, the Lions placed ninth overall out of a field of 20 teams.
“I’m proud of the team,” FHS head coach Raymond Friend said. “Landry, a freshman, ran his best race of the year, and I’m pleased with what we were able to accomplish here this year. It was a fast course, beautiful weather, so everyone ran well.
“To finish ninth at state, I couldn’t be happier.”
In his Top 20 finish, Frost had a time of 16:31.0, with an average mile of 5:18.6. His first mile time was 5:08.8, followed by a mile two time of 10:35.3, while his 4200-meter time was 13:58.3.

Frost spoke about his race on Saturday.
“I knew I was going to have to run strategic, and I knew the last part of the race was all about heart,” Frost said. “Basically, I went out smart and ran the race I knew how to run, and after that second mile, I knew it was go time and gave it everything I had.
“I was very pleased with the way I ran and can’t put into words how this feels. I never expected to be on the podium, and the feeling … I can’t explain it. I put in so much work this year, and it took a lot more effort. The weather was better than last year, and the course felt faster.”
For Davis, his Top 30 finish saw him race with a time of 16:37.3, as the senior had an average mile time of 5:20.7. His first mile time was 5:10.0, followed with a mile two time of 10:37.8, while his 4200m time was 14:03.6.
“Both of our top runners ran smart races, and if you look at their mile splits, they weren’t in the Top 20 at that point,” Friend said. “The first mile is a little out of your control, but they ran smart, and I bet you they passed 20 people on the second to third mile and knew exactly what they had to do. Ethan being a senior, I’m so proud of him being All-Ohio, and Cohen being a junior, who knows what he can do next year.
“Those two have carried us all year long, and the reason we got the Top 10 of the race was because those two were able to give us a good score to start out.”
In 88th place and the third finisher for the Lions was junior Blake Haines, as he had a final time of 17:32.2, with an average mile time of 5:38.3. Haines’ one-mile time was 5:21.3, followed with a mile two time at 11:05.8, and the 4200m time was 14:42.6.
Next was FHS senior Gavin Campbell in 123rd place overall with a time of 17:56.7. Campbell had an average mile time of 5:46.2, and within his overall time, his one-mile time was 5:26.0, and his mile two time was 11:18.9. At the 4200m mark, his time was 15:06.2.
In 131st overall was freshman Landry Hattan, as he made his state debut with a time of 18:01.3 in the race. Hattan finished with an average mile time of 5:47.7, while his mile one time was 5:32.3, his mile two time came in at 11:31.6 and the 4200m time was 15:11.0.
Junior Brant Haines was 137th overall with a time of 18:06.1, as he had an average mile time of 5:49.2. At the one-mile mark, Haines had a time of 5:27.2, and at the two-mile mark his time was 11:25.6. When the 4200m time was recorded, Haines had a time of 15:09.4.
The Lions also saw junior Nathan Vidourek finish in 175th place with a time of 19:45.0, with an average mile time of 6:21.0. Vidourek had a mile one time of 6:04.8, followed with a time of 12:40.6 at mile two. His 4200m time came in at 16:49.0.
As a team, the Lions totaled 250 points for the ninth-place finish. Winning the state Division III championship was Summit County Day with a score of 98. The individual state champion was junior Derek Amicon of Grandview Heights with a time of 15:42.5.
Friend spoke about seeing his team race at state for the seventh straight year.
“We had a huge group of fans back at the tent, and fans who didn’t even have kids here support us, and that is just a lot of fun,” Friend said. “This is something all of them can look back and always cherish and remember.”
