Area runners qualify for Div. III Regionals

Highland County had various athletes from Fairfield, Lynchburg-Clay and Whiteoak qualify for the regional tournament for their success in the 2014 Division III District Championships at Southeastern High School.

The two-day event saw the Lions, Mustangs and Wildcats each have athletes finish in the Top 4 of events, earning them a spot in the regional tournament this upcoming week.

For the Lions, they had the highest finisher in senior Michael Mangus, finishing first in the 3200-meter run with a time of 9:36.42, setting a new district record. The previous record was set in 2007 by South Webster High School's Josh Linkous with a time of 9:44.

Mangus also was third in the 1600m run at 4:25.76.

Also for FHS, the 4x800m relay team consisting of Mangus, Dustin Willey, Trent Swisher and Wyatt Evans will compete at the regional meet, as they finished third in the event with a time of 8:49.71.

The 4x800m event also say the LC Mustangs finish fourth and qualify for the regional tournament. The team of Noah Stoltz, Quinn Stoltz, Marc Blankenship and Brandon McCammon finished with a time of 9:23.27.

LC also qualified for the regional tournament in the 4x200m relay with Blankenship, Alex Pinkerton, T.J. Snider and Colt Dunseith finishing second with a time of 1:37.53.

The LC 4x100m relay team of Pinkerton, Snider, Austin Chisman and Dunseith placed second with a time of 48.38, also qualifying for regionals.

Another LC relay team qualified for regionals, as their 4x400m relay team of Chisman, Pinkerton, Blankenship and Quinn Stoltz finished with a time of 3:45.97, for third place.

In the discus, LC's Johnny Lewis placed fourth with a throw of 114-10.

Whiteoak's Derrick Ison placed second in the 400m dash at 52.41, with the freshman earning a spot in the regional tournament. Ison also was fourth in the 200m dash with a final time of 24.16.

Also for WHS, freshman Taylor Tackett placed fourth to qualify for the regionals, with a time of 28.14 in the 200m dash.
