17 Highland County basketball players selected AP All-District

A total of 17 Highland County boys and girls basketball players were selected to the 2016 Associated Press All-Southeast District team by members of the media for their overall play during the 2015-16 season.

Of the 17 players selected from Highland County, three players were named to the first team in their respective divisions. Those players included Lynchburg-Clay senior Devin Pierson for the boys, while LC senior Ali Little and McClain junior Taylor Polley earned first-team honors for the girls.

The 6-1 Pierson averaged 19.6 points per game at the time of the vote for LC, as he was one of eight boys basketball players selected AP All-District.

In Division II, McClain junior Jacob Starkey (6-5, 12.8 points per game) and Hillsboro senior D.J. Brown (6-3, 12.7 ppg.) were named to the third team.

Division III had three LC players make the list, as Pierson was the first-team selection, while teammates Joe Giordano (junior) and Eric McLaughlin (sophomore) each were selected to the third team All-District. Giordano (6-3) averaged 12.5 ppg., as did McLaughlin (6-4) at the time of the vote.

For Division IV, Fairfield senior Ethan Putnam (6-1) was selected to the Division IV second team with 17.1 ppg. Also in Div. IV, Whiteoak senior Brandon Ashbaugh (6-1) was a third-team selection with 14.5 ppg., and Wyatt Evans of FHS was named a special mention.

In the girls vote, Polley (5-6) was named to the first team in Div. II with 16.4 ppg., and in Div. III, Little (6-1) was a first-team selection with 10.3 ppg. and 9.8 rebounds per game.

Also in Div. II, McClain junior Malea Montavon (5-8), and Hillsboro senior Madison Snyder (5-10) each were selected to the third team. Montavon averaged 9.0 ppg., and Snyder had an average of 16.5 ppg.

For Div. III, Lynchburg-Clay juniors and twin sisters Hannah and McKayla Binkley each were voted to the second team. Hannah Binkley (5-9) averaged 15.8 ppg., and McKayla Binkley (5-9) had an average of 14.4 ppg. Also in Div. III, freshman Peyton Scott (5-6) was named to the third team with 16.2 ppg.

Div. IV saw two players from Highland County girls basketball earn All-District honors, with Whiteoak senior Emma Wardlow and Fairfield sophomore Grace Shope each selected to the second team. Wardlow (5-7) averaged 13.9 ppg. for the Lady Wildcats, and for the Lady Lions, Shope (5-10) averaged 19.0 ppg.
