Last week, 24 local athletes took the big stage in Las Vegas, Nev. to compete in the world’s largest acrobatic gymnastics competition. Over 1,100 of the top athletes from 18 countries from around the world traveled to Las Vegas for the World Cup and Invitational Event.

Awards were given to the top six in each age group/level. The Aerial’s Athletics team not only hit all 16 of their routines, but they also had 13 of the 24 athletes place in their divisions.

• Junior Elite 12-18 Trio: Sammi Shepherd, Megan Conover and Kealey James, 11th place.

“The coaching staff and families are so proud of these young athletes,” coach Angie Layne said. “We knew this would be a large and tough competition. We were thrilled to have all 24 athletes ‘hit’ their routines. Sixteen routines with no missed skills – that’s all you can ask of them – but then, to see some of our athletes finish at the top of their levels was just spectacular. Many beat out top athletes from the U.S. and other countries to medal.

“Where do we go from here, some have asked? We still have USA National Championships in July in Des Moines. We’d really like to have all athletes medal there. We definitely still have room to improve and will continue to work hard the next few months to best represent our community at Nationals.”
