There is a battle brewing for the Division I Southern Hills Athletic Conference championship, especially following Fairfield’s Tuesday night win over the Eastern Warriors by a 3-2 score, with the Lions winning in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the eighth for the extra-inning win.

The Lions are now 9-1 in the SHAC, while Eastern is 9-2 in the SHAC Division I standings. Fairfield has three SHAC games left on the schedule, those being West Union (May 4), North Adams (May 5) and Manchester (May 9) all at home in Leesburg.

Eastern has two SHAC games left on the schedule, those being at Whiteoak (May 4) and vs. Fayetteville (May 8).

In Tuesday's extra-inning win for the Lions, they trailed 2-0 after the top half of the fourth inning was complete, but answered with one run in both the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, tying the score at 2-2.

Fairfield’s first run crossed home plate with Cade Miller scoring off a ground out by Landry Hattan. Miller hit a one-out single in the fourth inning, then stole second and third bases before being batted in by Hattan.

In the fifth, Noah Allering singled to lead off the inning. He then took second on an error and went to third on a passed ball. Allering scored the game-tying run off a fielder’s choice hit by Dow Moon, leaving the score tied at 2-2.

Fairfield won the game in the bottom of the eighth with Gabe Fouch taking first base on an error to lead off the inning. Fouch stole second base, and with one out, Fouch stole third base and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Hattan to win the game, 3-2.

The Lions totaled six hits in the win and committed three errors. Eastern finished with four hits and had three errors.

Allering led the Lions with two hits, going 2-for-3 with one run. Moon was 1-for-4, Zane Matthews was 1-for-4 and Miller went 1-for-4. Wyatt Collins finished 1-for-3, while Fouch scored a run and Hattan had two RBI. Fouch and Miller each totaled two steals.

Fouch was the winning pitcher, as he went all eight innings in the win. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk, totaling six strikeouts. He threw 113 pitches, 75 for strikes, and faced 31 batters.

The win improves the Lions to 14-5 overall, and they are 9-2 in the Division I SHAC standings.
