"Your Place" for the Adult Learner Program and United Way are making a difference for local residents

Southern Ohio Center of Excellence’s (SOCOE) “Your Place” for the Adult Learner Program recently received funding from United Way of Greater Cincinnati to teach the “Your Place” for the Adult Learner class at the Adams/Brown Community Action Program’s (ABCAP) Building in Georgetown, Ohio. This program provides essential services for class participants by assisting individuals-in-transition in achieving their goals of attaining education and/or employment for the betterment of their families and society as a whole.
Success rate of participants have resulted in 80% or higher of going onto higher education and/or obtaining employment. Sue Evans, Executive Director and Facilitator states, “This is a great place for participants to begin; we have a Resource Lab for student support; and staff are mentors to help participants in achieving their goals.” Seventy-five percent of the recent class participants were residents of Brown County and twenty-five percent were residents of Adams County. Classes are funded through United Way’s Grant award and the Ohio College Access Network award match for the General Electric’s Community Service Fund Grant award that assisted participants with travel and childcare allowances which assists in retention efforts. Some participants would not be able to attend classes without these support services. Gayle Davis, The Lady with the Hattitude, has been a motivational speaker for the classes since 1990. She presented her Hattitudes to the class on Tuesday, February 8th and brought a guest, Dianne Shirley, of Huber Heights, Ohio. Individuals were presented with a Certificate of Completion which included Debra Singleton, Mt. Orab; David Kibbey and Donna Bentely, Fayetteville; Tiffany Adkins, Manchester; Carol Dotson and Martha Mason, Georgetown.
The next class will be offered at the ABCAP Building in Georgetown beginning March 21, 2011 and ending April 27, 2011. The 6-week class will operate on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Upon successful completion, participants receive a Certificate of Completion and continued support from the staff. Should a participant decide to continue in higher education at Chatfield College, located in Brown County, and complete the requirements, three-college semester hours will be awarded toward electives in obtaining their college degree. Classes have been offered at the new location since November 2010 and serves residents in Adams, Brown, Clermont, Highland, and surrounding counties.
