Woods wins ‘Student Caught Doing the Right Thing’ award
Lead Summary

By
Chloe Sluss and Kaylee Smith-
Cadet Sydney Woods won the “Student Caught Doing the Right Thing” award for the first nine weeks at McClain High School.
Woods helped an underclassman cadet with his math work. Master Sergeant Wilson nominated Woods because he saw her helping someone without being asked to do so. Woods will receive a gift card to McDonald’s as a reward for her kindness.
Teachers submit nominations for the “Student Caught Doing the Right Thing” award if they see students doing something good or kind without being told to do so or without wanting recognition. The award is given every nine-week quarter.

Wilson said of Woods, “I was not aware of the act until I saw them working together. I often teach ‘taking care of the troops,’ but it’s rare to see it in action without prompting.”
He also said that “Sydney has struggled with her social environment in the past, but late last year into this year, her growth has been tremendous.”
The other candidates that were nominated were Aly Murphy, Verda Adams and Dan Copas. They all did something good without being told to do so and without even knowing anyone was watching. Kindness goes a long way, but it never goes unnoticed.
Copas’ nominator had this to say: “Dan has a moral compass; he measures others against it. When they do something he doesn’t think is right, it bugs him and he has to say something.
He doesn’t say things to get himself in trouble with the kid, but will let me or the other teachers know about the situation.”
Adams’ nominator said: “I walked into the classroom, and Verda was talking to the freshmen students. She told them to appreciate the teachers because the teachers want them to graduate. She told them that she didn't appreciate the teachers when she was a freshman, but she sure does now because of all their help ... She then said, ‘Don't give them attitude because they only want what is best for you.’”
Murphy’s nominator said that she “consistently does what is expected of her. She is nice to all her classmates and volunteers her time. Last year, she was part of Big Brothers/Big Sisters."
