Whiteoak service learning students attend Fall Challenge

Brittany Waits, Bailey Walker, Nathan Hauke, and Ryan McCann, along with Mrs. Juillerat participated in the 3rd Annual Learn and Serve
Fall Challenge in Columbus, held October 17-19. The conference served many purposes: challenge student leaders, show the importance of volunteerism, and promote the Ohio Service Learning Program. Sunday night focused on exercises to get to know each other.
On Monday morning, the Whiteoak students were split into separate groups, each group focusing on a different community need. Ryan and Nathan helped make one thousand hygiene bags for the homeless shelter in Columbus. Brittany worked alongside Ryan and Nathan, but focused on documentation and working with the media crew, eventually creating a web site with information about the event.
Bailey was placed at Fancyburg Park in Upper Arlington to document the landscape group. The students cleared away invasive species in
the area and replaced them with native species to replace the trees that were cut down. The conference concluded Tuesday morning with a breakfast in the company of Laura Padgett, a legislative aide of Senator John Carey.
The students left the Fall Challenge with a rush of energy and ideas.
