Lead Summary

By
Selena Sims and Sam Faulconer-
TV and Radio teacher Drew Hamilton was recently interviewed about his participation on McClain’s Building Leadership Team. Read on to learn more about this team of leaders.
Q: Who are the members of the Building Leadership Team?
A: Myself, Mr. Andrews, Mrs. Barber, Mr. Haines, Mrs. Garman, Ms. Putnam, Mrs. Hutchinson, Ms. Kesler, Mr. Luke, Mrs. Barrett, Mr. Potts, Mr. Shelton and Brett Malone.
Q: What do the members do?
A: BLT is where all the administrators and department heads (math, English, science, history, etc.) come together and set (guidelines) and standards and make decisions for the high school as a unit. Sometimes, we take stuff back to what we call TBT meetings (department and grade-level meetings), make decisions, ask for opinions, and then (take those discussions) back to the BLT meetings … We also discuss goals for the student body.
Q: Do you have a specific job?
A: I, myself, do not. Now as far as each meeting goes, we switch around the jobs that we sign up for at the beginning of the year, but Mr. Shelton or Mr. Potts are generally the meeting facilitators. We have someone record and take notes, we have a timekeeper, and we have a process observer who basically gives a grade on how the meeting went. We rotate with these jobs throughout the year.
Q: How often does the team meet?
A: At least once a month. Generally, it’s after school from 2:30 to around 3:30 or 4 p.m. A couple times throughout the year we meet a full day, normally at the beginning of the year and the end of the year.
Q: What are some challenges of being on the BLT?
A: Knowing that you are making decisions for the whole school and the whole building.
Q: What does a typical meeting look like?
A: A lot of the time, we are looking at data and asking ourselves how we can improve things. We look at how to improve things such as test scores, attendance and communication from building to building.
Q: What is the main focus of the BLT at this moment?
A: How to improve communication and test scores. We want to give our kids the best chance at life after high school and whatever it is that they want to do.
Q: Are there any goals that the BLT would like to reach by the end of this year?
A: Improve attendance rate and graduation rate, and we would like to have kids receive a year and a half’s worth of growth in one school year.
