WC's Issues & Artists Series to address 'The Iran Question'

The author of the acclaimed book "The Ayatollah Begs to Differ" will offer his insight into the enigmatic state of Iran Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m., in Hugh G. Heiland Theatre.
Hooman Majd will provide guidance in answering the questions “What should America do about Iran and what should it not do?” in the second program in the College’s 2010-11 Issues & Artists Series, titled “The Iran Question: Understanding Iran and What We Should Do about It?”
Though Iran is a top foreign policy concern for the United States, most Americans know “dangerously little or flat out misunderstand” the nation’s political motives.
In his talk, Majd reveals the motivations of Iran’s political and religious leaders, a group fiercely protective of what it perceives as the country’s rights. He will offer insight into where the true power in Iran is found, as well as previewing Iran’s upcoming presidential elections.
He also will “dismantle” its nuclear program and delve into the country’s complex relationships with Iraq, the Middle East and the United States.
Majd reminds us the United States and Iran both want the Islamic state to join the mainstream international community.
In his book, The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: The Paradox of Modern Iran, Majd tells the story based upon personal experiences in Tehran and contact with Iranians ranging from ordinary people to access he had as unpaid an adviser to the country’s presidents Khatami and Ahmadinejad.
