WBHS students participate in DECA Idea Challenge

In honor of Global Entrepreneurship Week, a worldwide celebration of innovators and entrepreneurs, the ninth-grade marketing students at Western Brown High School participated in the DECA Idea Challenge.
This is a fast-paced competition that challenges students around the world to find an innovative use for a common, everyday item in only eight days. The marketing students, in teams of three to four members, came up with a new product idea using newspaper and then created a YouTube presentation promoting it.
This competition is a fun way for students to be creative and innovative while learning about business processes. To prepare for the contest, students learned about marketing functions and utilities.
The students’ entries were judged locally by Adams Brown Recycling.

The top three teams consisted of Kyle Boggs, Rachel Kuttler, Cady Taylor and Hanna Young for their recycling can; Ella Brinkman, Mason Showalter, and Faith Carpenter for their hypoallergenic flower basket; and Seth Becker, Brandon Lucas, Jennifer Rogers and M.J. Watson for their reusable lunch box.
Adams Brown Recycling also donated the recycled glass suncatchers made by the Glass reFactory as prizes.
Global winners will be announced in January.
The students are instructed by Kristin Depenbrock, one of two marketing educators at Western Brown High School. The program is a satellite of Southern Hills Career and Technical Center. Students at WBHS have the opportunity to complete four years of marketing education and participate in the student organization DECA, which prepares emerging leaders for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.
