Sykes wins masonry competition

Senior Gary Sykes of Miami Trace won first place this month in the annual Ohio/Kentucky High School Masonry Competition.

Sykes, formerly of Wilmington, attends Laurel Oaks Career Campus, where he’s in the masonry program.
 
He was among six Laurel Oaks students in the competition, held at the Southern Ohio Training Center of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers in Batavia. The students were given a set of plans, a pile of materials and a limited amount of time to demonstrate their skill in building a brick and masonry structure.
