Students leading the way at Rainsboro; Middle School athletes recognized

Rainsboro students are crafting a way for students at the school to be able to focus better throughout the day. It’s a sensory path, and it’s something the Greenfield Exempted Village District Board of Education got to hear about at its regular meeting on Monday, Feb. 23.
Third-graders Annika Pryor, Grayson Karnes and Bode Reed gave a PowerPoint presentation for board members about their ideas on why a sensory path would benefit the students of Rainsboro and what that might look like.
According to the students’ presentation, there is already a wall with a few activities like wall push ups with paw prints where students' hands go, and another place with the solar system and at the top the words “Reach for the Stars,” which is surrounded by stars. The students want to add to this, and adding more small activities, they said, will help students be able to “reset their minds” by performing these small activities instead of acting out from boredom during their walks in the hallways, which can cause a lot of disruption for all students.
The students also talked about a building-wide collection they coordinated for military members. They collected things like personal hygiene items, candy, and activity books, and fifth graders added notes to the boxes that were put together. Teacher Marci Reeves helped them get the boxes shipped.
In other meeting matters, district treasurer Brad Barber presented the five-year forecast, which is required to be done twice a year, once in November and then an update, which was previously required in May, but is now required in February.
The forecast, he said previously, only pertains to the general fund and is submitted to the state to review a district’s fiscal health. The forecast is not a guess, but projections based on what is presently known.
The projections provided Monday are: 2026 - $12.30 million; 2027 - $12.10 million; 2028 - $10.73 million; 2029 - $8.11 million; and 2030 - $4.01 million.
Barber noted that throughout the forecast the district remains in the positive numbers. He said the biggest unknown over the next few years is the implementation of legislation regarding property taxes, but he added that the forecast will be adjusted once more of the unknown becomes known.
In another matter, which also involves the treasurer, the board approved a three-year contract for Barber as the district treasurer.
In other business, middle school student athletes were recognized during the school board meeting. Those were: league champs eighth grade boys basketball (coached by Nik Beatty) – Eli Clevenger, Kai Cornett, Cylus Davis, Haydn Faulconer, Liam Fraley, Renick Gray, Luke Lafferty, Isaac Lee, Parker Mastin, Jodeci Rickman, Ross Roman, Gatlin Secrist, Rooker Stark, and Gavin Watson; league champs seventh grade girls basketball (coached by Leann Thieman) – Madison Bihl, Nevaeh Campbell, Emerlee Highley, Kassidy Johnson, Julia King, Aubree Potts, Lucy Ross, Madison Shaffer, Kyrriah Stepp, Lillian Todd, Harper White and Bexley Wright; eighth grade cheer (coached by Ciera Swan) – Nah’khia Brown, Grace Homola, Avery Miller, Malaia Simmons, Layken Vickers, and Alie Wilson; girls wrestling league champ in weight class (coached by Justin Kegley) – Brooklyn Simmons; boys wrestling league champs in their weight class (coached by Michael Aeh) – De’Andre Ford and Orion Fligor; and the undefeated middle school swim team (coached by Rick Duffus and Loretta Flora) – Landan Cullom, Lucas Dettwiller, TJ Fout, Ezra Green, Hayden Hamilton, Andrew Hommes, Parker Kinnison, Nikolai Mick-Humphries, Brody Murdock, Owen Snavely, Samuel Solarte Sandoval, Jaxson Storts, Caleb Sword, Lucas Warren, Parker Watkins, Garrett Webb, Jr. Williams, Addison Allen, Audrey Benner, Ellen Cullom, Jordan Hawkins, Alaina Henry, Lacey Hill, Milah Hommes, Emily Homola, Grace Homola, Isabella Knowles, Jariah Lester, Annabella McGee, Brailynn Munyan, Madelyn Penwell, Rilee Reser, Addisyn Russell, Sydnee Walker, Naleiha Washburn and Elyssa Wolford.
Items approved as part of the consent agenda included the purchase of an 81-passenger, handicap-accessible bus, the school calendar for the 2026-2027 school year, the resignation of bus driver Rachael Crabtree, the resignation of food service director Stephanie Lanning, and the resignation of head cook Shelley Smith.
Employment recommendations approved by the board were Shelley Smith - food service director; Charles Frazier - certified substitute; Jennifer Priest - aide, cafeteria; Jamie Mankin - jr. high track; and Haley Butterbaugh - jr. high track.
