St. Mary Catholic School pupils honor area veterans

Hillsboro resident Rodgers Creed Culbreath served as master of ceremonies for the 2014 Veterans Day observances, as students and staff of St. Mary Catholic School in Hillsboro held a special Veterans Day observance Tuesday, Nov. 11 at the school.

St. Mary School Instructor Karen Trout led pupils in singing patriotic songs outside the school prior to a flag-raising ceremony by members of the Knights of Columbus Color Corps and Honor Guard.

Those in attendance sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" and recited The Pledge of Allegiance.

Culbreath spoke of the history of Armistice Day, which coincides with Remembrance Day and Veterans Day, and is commemorated every year on November 11 to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning – the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918.

Culbreath recognized the many sacrifices that all veterans have made for America's freedom and security.

Fr. Mike Paraniuk of St. Mary Catholic Church led a prayer on behalf of all veterans.
