SSU graduates 225 at Fall Commencement

PORTSMOUTH – On Friday, Dec. 12, Shawnee State University conferred degrees on 225 students at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts as part of Fall Commencement.

Of those who received degrees, 120 received bachelor’s degrees, 71 received associate degrees, and 34 received master’s degrees.

Many of these students were the first in their families to graduate from college and overcame significant barriers to complete their degrees. Yet they not only succeeded, they excelled. Nearly one in every five of the students graduated with honors.

“When you came to Shawnee State, you brought qualities that shape who you are and how you view the world and they have been influenced by your experience here,” SSU President Rita Rice Morris said to the graduates in her commencement address. “Your experience here has refined those qualities and you are now better prepared for what is ahead.”

This fall Class of 2014 now joins the more than 15,000 alumni who are using the degrees they earned at Shawnee State University to make a difference in communities all over the world.

“Whatever path you took to get to this day, you made good choices along the way that will serve you well as you leave Shawnee State,” Morris said. “We look forward to continuing our relationship with you as alumni.”

For friends and family unable to attend the ceremony, commencement was streamed live on the web.
