SSU celebrates Women's History Month

In March, Shawnee State University will be celebrating Women’s History Month with several featured speakers and activities.
On Tuesday, March 1, Jessica Valenti, author of “He’s a Stud, She’s a Slut: … and 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should Know” is the featured speaker of the 2011 Leslie Williams Symposium and part of the Jane M. G. Foster Distinguished Lecture Series at 7 p.m. in the main theater of the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.
Assistant Professor of English and Humanities Thomas Piontek will give a historical overview of the “Three Waves of Feminism” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8 in the University Center, Room 214.
The eighth annual Read In will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9 in Clark Memorial Library’s Alcove. The Read In will honor female writers with people sharing excerpts from works by favorite authors and to share their own favorite pieces. Snacks will be provided but people are also encouraged to bring their lunches while listening to the readings.
The film “Iron Jawed Angels” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22 in the Flohr Lecture Hall. The movie is a 2004 film about the American women’s suffrage movement during the 1920s, starring Hillary Swank. Learn about how political activists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns used peaceful and effective strategies to revolutionize the American Feminist movement to grant women the right to vote.
The last speaker of the month, Ginny Young, a doctoral candidate in history at West Virginia University, will give a lecture, “There Isn’t a Darn Thing About This Job a Woman Can’t Do,” on various ways some women resisted gender segregation in the mid-20th century workplace.
All events are free and open to the public.
