SSCC plans Appalachian Skills Camp for kids, teens arts workshops for students in grades 4-12 will be held June 14-18

Students entering grades 4-12 are invited to attend the 2010 Appalachian Skills Camp at Southern State Community College’s South Campus in Fincastle.

 

 

SSCC plans Appalachian Skills Camp for kids, teens

Arts workshops for students in grades 4-12 will be held June 14-18

 

There are lots of summer camps, but only one like the Appalachian Skills Camp. Designed for students entering grades 4-12, the 2010 Appalachian Skills Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, June 14-18, at Southern State Community College’s South Campus, 12681 U.S. Route 62, Fincastle.

Participants can choose from five different workshop tracks, including pottery, knitting, photography, leather crafting, and general creativity.

* POTTERY ($25) — Students will learn the basic principles of shaping, glazing and firing pottery, and will complete several projects using hand-shaping and coil techniques, as well as how to apply an acrylic finish.

* EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVE SIDE ($40) — Students will express ideas and imagination using a wide range of materials. They will create collages, drawings and paintings, using fabric, watercolor, acrylics, materials found in nature, and more. The class will formulate a direction or theme through discussions and exercises. Participants will complete a portfolio or visual journal filled with ideas and images, along with at least one work of art suitable for display.

* BEGINNING KNITTING AND MORE ($25) — Students will learn basic knitting stitches and will take on actual knitting projects suitable for beginners. All supplies will be provided and participants will end up with several items to take home. With practice, participants will be able to create everything from scarves to throw blankets.

* PHOTOGRAPHY ($45) — Students will learn a brief history of photography and how a camera works. They will experience hands on use of cameras (both film and digital), as well as critiquing photographs and learning how to frame. Students will be photographing each other in “model shoots” during the week. Therefore, guardians will need to sign a model release form for participation. Students must provide their own cameras (digital or film).

* LEATHER CRAFTING ($40) — Students will be introduced to the procedure of tanning skins to form leather. They will use the stamping process to create designs in leather on small articles such as bracelets, key fobs and key cases. Please note that this workshop meets June 15-18.
