SSCC to offer dental assistant, veterinary training programs

Through a partnership with Boston Reed College, Southern State Community College now provides continuing education programs in dental assistant and veterinary assistant training.

These new programs prepare students for job opportunities in the growing allied health industry, as well as other in-demand occupations.

A free informational session will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, in Room 107 of Southern State's Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro.

"We are pleased to report that both these courses will be offered again, beginning in January," said John Joy, SSCC Dean of Workforce Development and Community Services.

"Offered for the first time this past fall, these courses were well attended we're proud to announce. It is a vital part of our mission to provide access for local adults to affordable training that can lead to sustainable job opportunities in healthcare and other industries. It's estimated that 20 percent of new jobs through 2014 will be located in the medical industry, and the majority of these positions will be filled by individuals with four years or less of training."

The short-term, affordable training opportunity will provide interested, motivated individuals seeking entry level jobs the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a job in allied health fields.

As part of its partnership model, Boston Reed College provides all materials and instructors, and helps place students in externships upon completion of classroom instruction. Upon completion of the partnership program, many students are immediately eligible for employment and often pursue higher education, working toward nursing or other healthcare pathways. Fees vary by program and include textbooks, classroom materials, externships and certificates of completion.
