SSCC to host High School Art Showcase on Feb. 12

The annual Area High School Art Showcase will be open for viewing 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, in the Appalachian Gateway Center on Southern State Community College’s South Campus, 12681 U.S. Route 62, near Sardinia. The gallery will open at 1 p.m. with refreshments and the awards ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
“The days may be short and the weather may be taking its toll, but there’s always something to look forward to in February,” said James D. Werline, SSCC art instructor. “Please join us on Saturday to view the artistic creations of the area’s finest high school art students.”
This annual exhibition and competition is organized by the Appalachian Gateway Center Exhibits Committee in conjunction with Southern State Community College’s art department. The exhibition is sponsored by General Electric Community Arts Fund, Appalachian Artists Guild, Appalachian Exhibits Committee, and the Southern State Community College Foundation. Students in the exhibition are representing area school districts Eastern Brown High School (EBHS), Blanchester High School (BHS), Lynchburg-Clay High School (LCHS), Hillsboro High School (HHS), Manchester High School (Manchester), North Adams High School (NAHS), and Greenfield McClain High School (McClain).
The juror’s panel included James D. Werline and Tammy Wells, who awarded Best of Show honors to Cierra Countryman of EBHS for “BP 170/100,” Reserve Best of Show honors to Jamie Gustin of HHS for “Pond,” and Honorable Mention Best of Show awards to Sarah Balzer of McClain for “Sarah” and to Madeline Zerbe of Manchester for “Self Portrait.” The jurors also determined awards in the following categories:
