The Southern State Community College Foundation and the Highland County Democratic Party have announced their recipient of the Highland County Democratic Party Scholarship for the 2026-2027 academic year.
Highland County resident, Charles Jackson, is a 2022 graduate of Greenfield McClain High School, and is pursuing his associate’s degree in Nursing at SSCC.
The $500 scholarship is awarded to financially support a deserving individual who proves (through their essay response) their understanding of how government is responsive to citizens, including an example of how a governmental organization (local, state, or federal) has been responsive to them, a member of their family, or someone they know.
In his essay response, Jackson noted that in a democracy, the needs of its citizens should be of utmost importance, explained important ways that the government helps the older population through social security, and noted personal examples from the perspective of a student nurse.
“The Highland County Democratic Party is involved in many activities that support local citizens. We are very proud that our scholarship will help Charles pursue his goal to become a registered nurse. Our Party's goals include being involved in all aspects of our community as well as electing qualified local, state, and national candidates. This is just one of the many ways we support our community,” stated Highland County Democratic Party Chairperson, Dinah Phillips.
“We are grateful for the support and generosity of our friends in the Highland County Democratic Party, and are thankful that this support will help a well-deserving student continue his education and take meaningful steps toward achieving his goals,” said Dr. Nicole Roades, President.
