The Southern State Community College Foundation has announced Heidi Calderon as the recipient of the Joyce Fender Family Scholarship for the 2022 spring semester.

Calderon graduated from Amelia High School in 2016 and is pursuing a major in accounting at SSCC.

As a single mother of two young boys, Calderon is enrolled as a full-time student, taking classes online and planning to graduate with her associate’s degree in May. Her goal is to eventually obtain a bachelor’s degree and work for a large accounting firm, with hopes of one day opening up her own accounting firm business.

Joyce Magee Fender was an innovator in the world of business and an inspiration to many who knew her. This $500 Joyce Fender Family Scholarship is awarded to a single parent with a minimum GPA of 2.6, who is pursuing a business major, with preference given to students of Highland County.

“We are proud to partner with Southern State and are glad that a deserving student like Heidi will be able to further her education with this assistance,” said Jenny Hilterbran, daughter of the late Joyce Fender. “When I read her application, I just knew this was exactly the type of person my mom would have helped, so much so that I asked if I could award her two scholarships and give her $1,000.”

Calderon added on her application, “Being a single mother really motivates me to do everything I can to finish schooling and become a better version of myself, not only for myself, but my children as well.”
