Seth Allen of Fairfield High School wins Hillsboro Rotary Club Four-Way Speech Contest

Seth Allen of Fairfield High School was named the winner of the 2016 Hillsboro Rotary Club Four-Way Speech Contest, held Tuesday, March 8 at the Ponderosa Banquet Center.

Other finalists this year were Braden Heizer, also of Fairfield, and Chloe Griggs and Bryanna Buerkle of Hillsboro High School.

The students receive cash awards from the Rotary Club for their winning speeches.

The contestant must apply the Rotary Four-Way Test to the concepts of leadership, service to others and life experience. The Rotary Four-Way Speech Test is as follows:

• Is it the TRUTH?

• Is it FAIR to all concerned?

• Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

• Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

The speech is to be presented from memory without the aid of podium, notes, displays or props.

This year's judges were Jennifer West of the Highland County District Library; Mike Thomas of Laurel Oaks; and Tim Koehl of the Paxton Theatre.

The committee includes Kathy Bruynis, Keith Chambers, Melissa Elmore, Doug Ernst, Amatha Farrens, Lynn Turner, Jim Smith, Sue Smith and Adam Zink.

The Hillsboro Rotary Club winner also has the opportunity to compete in the annual District Competition on April 10 at Wright State University. The top four finalists in the event will receive a cash prize ranging from $100 to $400.

Hillsboro Rotary Club was founded in October 1936. The local club is a member of Rotary International, with its roots in Evanston, Ill.
