Racing fever strikes Lynchburg-Clay Cub Scouts

On Saturday, Feb. 26, Cub Scouts, their parents, siblings and friends participated in the annual Pinewood Derby, which was held at the Lynchburg-Clay Elementary School.
Boys from the Lynchburg Pack 120 Cub Scouts have been working for several weeks to put the finishing touches on their Derby vehicles. The annual event gives everyone a chance to participate in some light-hearted competition.
The Pinewood Derby is a Scouting tradition, one which has taken place for decades. The event is designed to help young Scouts develop their woodworking skills and to foster friendly competition among all participants.
This year’s event, with more than 30 competitors, did not disappoint.
The boys competed in their respective age brackets for ribbons. Winners from each bracket advanced to the finals, to compete for the trophies which were awarded to the top three competitors. Every boywho participated in the double-elimination tournament received a ribbon to commemorate their efforts.
“Outlaw” class races were held, to allow siblings, future and former scouts a chance to compete.
“Do Your Best” is a guiding principle of Cub Scouts and Scouting in general. The boys who participated in this year’s Derby proved once again that an important part of life is to make an effort and have fun in the process.
