The Ohio Department of Education, Office for Exceptional Children, is required to ensure compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA).
Section 3323.02 O.R.C. requires the special education program of each school district to be operated in accordance with the procedures, standards, and guidelines adopted by the State Board of Education in order to receive state or federal funds for the district’s special education program.
The outcome of the IDEA Monitoring Process should provide valuable information for school districts' planning process to improve results for children with disabilities, including implementation of special education processes and services/supports for students with disabilities.
OEC conducts two different types of Monitoring Process reviews. One is the IDEA Selective Review. The purpose of a selective review is to determine compliance with federal and state laws for serving students with disabilities; and to assist LEAs in resolving specific issues or concerns. The second type of review is the IDEA Monitoring and Strategic Improvement Process review. The purpose of this review is to determine compliance with federal and state laws for serving students with disabilities and to assist educational agencies in building a continuous improvement process.
The intent of both IDEA Monitoring Process reviews is to maximize the use of resources that will result in better academic, social and post-secondary outcomes for students with disabilities and to meet regulatory requirements.
As part of the overall process, the Ohio Department of Education will hold a town hall meeting from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2 in the Clark Memorial Library at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth.
