McClain High School opens Centennial time capsule

Past, present and future McClain High School students were on hand Thursday morning for the opening of a time capsule from 1914.

As the high school celebrates its Centennial this weekend, activities kicked off with the opening of the time capsule, located in the cornerstone of the building, according to Larry Chapman at mcclain100.org.

Mrs. Penwell of Greenfield Elementary told The Highland County Press that the second graders of Greenfield Elementary, class of 2026, enjoyed learning about Edward Lee McClain High School. The students were excited to see the area where the time capsule was located and were lucky enough to see the contents inside. Afterwards, the students enjoyed a tour through the high school and were amazed by the beauty of the school.

McClain High School student Hunter Scott reported that the oldest living MHS graduate, Helen Caplinger, was also on hand to view the time capsule opening.

According to Chapman, Greenfield Exempted Schools superintendent Joe Wills said the contents of the time capsule will be placed in a glass display case during the celebration and will later be professionally preserved.
