On Saturday, March 15, 12 students from Lynchburg-Clay High School competed in the District 17 Science Day at Wilmington College.

Five students received a superior rating and will advance to the State Science Day on May 10 at the Ohio State University.

Those receiving a superior rating were Julie Arnett with “Huddle and Cuddle; Keeping Baby Piglets Warm,” Hayley McConnaughey with “The Effect of Type of Shoe on Running Speed,” Keysha Taylor with “The Effect of Variety of Apple on the Amount of Sugar,” Quinn Walker with “What Percent of Foods From the Local Grocery Contain Genetically Modified Organisms?” and Tristan Wilbanks with “The Effect of pH Levels of Fruits and Vegetables on the Amount of Energy Produced.”

Students were sponsored by high school science teachers Lara Hamilton and Alicia Shope.

First held in 1949, the 61st Annual State Science Day is sponsored by The Ohio Academy of Science, American Electric Power, The Ohio Environmental Education Fund and Boehringer Ingelheim Roxane, Inc.

The academic equivalent of a State athletic championship, this year’s event is the largest of its kind in the nation. State Science Day is the pinnacle of student-originated, inquiry-based science education. At this year’s State Science Day, $4.5 million worth of scholarships and awards will be presented to high achieving students from across the state of Ohio.
