The Lynchburg-Clay High School Envirothon team recently competed and placed second in the 26th Ohio Envirothon competition at Salt Fork State Park in eastern Ohio.

The team consisted of Kirsten Banks, Kelsey Clinton, Hannah Burns, Gabriel Kirsch, and Shannon MacLeod and was coached by high school chemistry teacher Lara Hamilton.

The two-day contest consisted of field testing in aquatics, forestry, soil, and wildlife and an oral presentation on the topic of Sustainable Agriculture. The team placed second overall and received a plaque and $250.

In order to get the opportunity to compete at the state contest, the team competed in the Area 5 Envirothon contest in March. They received fourth place out of 45 teams.

The top four places in each of the five areas of the state advance to the state contest.

At the state contest, Lynchburg competed against 19 other schools. By placing second at the state, Lynchburg was in the top 2 percent of schools in the state.

While the students were taking the tests, the sponsoring teachers were divided into teams and also took the same tests. Coach Hamilton was on the first place teacher’s team which consisted of the coaches from Wynford High School, Beavercreek High School, and North Adams High School.

The team would like to thank Coach Hamilton for her many years of coaching the team, their sponsors, and Highland and Brown Soil and Water Conservation Districts for providing study materials.
