A Brown County teacher and Hillsboro High School graduate is currently among the top 10 vote-getters in Reader’s Digest’s America’s Favorite Teacher contest, with votes being accepted online until Thursday evening.

Adam McGinnis, a sixth-grade teacher at Georgetown Elementary, is currently sixth place as of April 23. Voting for the Top 5 ends Thursday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at https://americasfavteacher.org/2024/adam-mcginnis.

McGinnis is a graduate of Hillsboro High School and Wilmington College.

According to McGinnis’ page, “I care about my students beyond test scores and grades. I want them to wake up and be excited about what we are studying in my class. I enjoy developing positive relationships with my students and creating a classroom environment where all voices are heard and all students feel welcome.

“Every year my students learn to fold paper cranes alongside reading Sadako and the 1,000 Paper Cranes. This activity serves as a link between every student I've taught, and I've witnessed how this activity becomes common ground for the students in our District. Creating positive connections around literature is a powerful bond and allows all students, regardless of ability level, to share in a meaningful experience. To me, this is true inclusion.”

The winner of the contest will appear in Reader’s Digest, win a trip to Hawaii and will be awarded $25,000.

“I would use the funds to help students who are pursuing their dreams by furthering their education in college and/or vocational school,” McGinnis wrote.
