Leesburg Lions Club honors GOOD students

At their May 21 meeting, the Leesburg Lions Club honored eight Fairfield Local students from grades 5-12 with G.O.O.D. Program Awards.

The G.O.O.D. Program (“Going On Or Defeated”) was started by Ron Derry, an Ohio teacher and member of the Pickerington Lions Club.

Mr. Derry was the guest speaker for the evening and told how, after 18 years of teaching, he suddenly went blind and was forced to “go on or be defeated.” At that point, he dedicated his life to encouraging people to understand that all problems can be overcome.

The concept of the G.O.O.D. Program is to recognize young people who work hard and exhibit standards of good citizenship, personal skills and study habits. One student from each of the eight grades was chosen by their teachers and received a letter of recommendation from the teachers, a certificate and a G.O.O.D. T-shirt. The senior recipient, Garrett Rinehart, also received a $500 college scholarship.

This year’s winning students were: Rachel Schuler (5th grade), Nick Price (6th grade), Chelsea Brown (7th grade), Olivia Mitchell (8th grade), Michael Border (9th grade), Jenny Webb (10th grade), Wesley Lamb (11th grade), and Garrett Rinehart (12th grade).

The Leesburg Lions Club congratulates all these fine students.
