Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose announced Thursday that for the 2022 General Election, Ohio’s 88 county boards of elections will utilize the State Board of Education districts designated by the governor on Jan. 31, 2022.

By law, 11 members of the board are elected by Ohio voters, and their districts must be newly established by the General Assembly according to the most recent decennial redistricting process.

Absent that legislative action, the governor has the authority to establish the new districts (ORC 3301.01 and 3301.02). As the Ohio General Assembly did not establish new board districts within the statutory time required by law, the governor issued a Letter of Designation on Jan. 31, 2022, setting the district boundaries. (The governor’s letter is pictured.)

Candidates interested in running for the State Board of Education must file by Aug. 10, 2022. A full 2022 election calendar can be viewed by clicking here: https://www.ohiosos.gov/publications/2022-elections-calendar.
