Humane Society kicks off educational program

The Highland County Humane Society recently spoke to students at Wilmington College about awareness of animal cruelty and humane education. 

While I was at the Humane Society one afternoon to pick up animal cruelty complaints, a group of Wilmington College Students were volunteering at the shelter. 

The students sparked interest in animal cruelty issues and wasn't aware that there were people who do actually respond to complaints of animal cruelty within their communities.

The students wanted to know more and after speaking with their college about the idea, they invited me and Humane Society volunteer Colin Haller, who assists me with the educational programs.

The Wilmington College students displayed a high level of interest and asked several questions.

I touched on subjects concerning animal cruelty issues, what to look for when reporting animal cruelty and who the proper entities are, to call and report it. I also spoke about why animal cruelty awareness and humane education is important, along with a slide show presentation for a projection screen that I created for the students.

I also have spoken with students in several schools since I began doing humane educational programs in 2002. Grade levels have ranged from kindergarten through seniors and now recently at the college level.

The Highland County Humane Society wants to kick off their humane educational program in 2013 by reaching out to more students in the local school districts and not only schools, but also groups and other people in the community.
