Hughes prepares for upcoming role in WC show

Greenfield resident Zachary A. Hughes is currently in rehearsals for his upcoming role in the Wilmington College Theatre presentation of "Violet: The Musical." This production runs Nov. 17, 18 and 19 beginning each evening at 7:30 in the Hugh G. Heiland Theatre.
Hughes, a WC senior majoring in art and education, plays the role of the preacher in this off-Broadway hit which is based upon Doris Betts' short story, "The Ugliest Pilgrim." It's set in the Deep South at the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement. As a young woman, Violet sets out on a bus trip to Oklahoma to visit a faith healer. Her hope is that he can fix her horribly disfigured face and allow her to live a full life.
"Violet: The Musical" is described as a story about healing and learning how to love oneself. Supporting characters reveal lessons learned about the power of forgiveness and the strength to overcome challenges when faced with situations beyond their control.
Hughes is a 2008 graduate of East Clinton High School.
