On Saturday, Dec. 14, two of Hillsboro's robotics teams traveled to Newark, Ohio to compete in the Licking Valley VEX Qualifier.

The two teams from Hillsboro were Bravo Squad, comprised of Abby K. and Jake S., and Charlie Squad, comprised of Lane W., Evan F. and Will H. In all, 42 teams from 10 schools competed.

The event began with each team playing five qualifying matches with a randomly selected alliance partner against another randomly selected two-team alliance. Bravo Squad's record was 4-1, while Charlie Squad’s record was 3-2. After the qualifying matches, Bravo Squad was seeded third and Charlie Squad was seeded 12th.

Bravo Squad chose Charlie Squad as their alliance partners for the eliminations round, and it was a good matchup. They breezed through their first three elimination matches to face the Pickerington High School alliance teams in the finals. Hillsboro won that event, 75-20, scoring the most points in a match of any alliance that day.

This was the second team victory for Charlie Squad this year and the first for Bravo Squad. Earlier, at North Union, Alpha Squad won the Excellence Award, so Hillsboro now has three high school teams qualified for state competition in March.
