Hillsboro Middle School robotics team competes at River Valley Middle School
The Hillsboro Middle School Robotics team competed in their second tournament on Dec. 5.
The teams of students utilize the engineering design process to create, configure and compete with their designed robots. Many students have been working diligently creating and designing various robots for this year’s challenge, Nothing But Net.
The HMS Robotics team began at the beginning of the school year and is led by coaches Mr. Amore, Mrs. Armstrong and Mr. Crowder.

Much like the students, this first year has been a learning experience for the coaches as well. Students compete through an autonomous section, which is a programming portion that allows students to write, and then the program is automatically run without student involvement.
Following the autonomous portion is a driver-controlled time period where students have more opportunities to score points.
More importantly, each team must maintain a detailed engineering notebook that includes their team members/picture, sketches of their design, daily progress notes and the science and math behind their design.
This new course offering is providing a student-centered, competitive, STEM learning environment to promote interest in STEM-based careers for the students in our community.
Overall, this first season has been a success. We are pleased with the commitment, dedication and the students’ drive for success.
