Hillsboro kindergartners attend FFA’s Food for America event

On Tuesday, May 9, the kindergartners of Hillsboro Elementary School took a field trip to Hillsboro High School to participate in the annual Food for America event hosted by the FFA.
The event was originally intended to be held at a local farm, but due to inclement weather conditions, the location was moved into the high school, greenhouse and FFA barn.

Despite the gloomy weather outside, the kindergartners were able to participate in a variety of fun activities. Inside the high school building, they learned about the life cycle of a chicken and had the opportunity to see and pet a live chick. They learned about sheep and played a game called "Shear the Sheep," in which they "sheared" shaving cream off a wooden sheep built by one of the FFA members. They also made crafts, raced pedal tractors, sat on a real tractor and ate trail mix.
In the greenhouse, the kindergartners learned how to plant a variety of flowers. After taking a short bus ride down to the FFA barn, the kindergartners were able to see and pet farm animals, including pigs, goats, donkeys, horses, rabbits and a cow. While they were in the barn, they also learned about fish, milked a dairy cow, learned to rope and played games like cornhole and stick horse riding.
"Our FFA chapter loves hosting Food for America because it sparks an interest in agriculture in the youth of Hillsboro,” Morgan Holland, Hillsboro FFA Student Advisor, said.
The Hillsboro FFA Chapter works year-round to better the county through community service projects, help students realize their potential through Career Development Events and educate all people about the importance of agriculture, not only in the local community, but all across the globe.
