Fourth-grade students at Hillsboro Elementary listen intently as Sgt. Pamela (Palmer) Pinney, a teacher at the school, shares her insights and memories on Veterans’ Day. Sgt. Pinney urged students to develop the same character qualities in school that are required in the military: perseverance, courage, respect for authority. “The things we say and do today,” says Pinney, “definitely affect our future. Make your choices carefully now.” Students shared stories about family members who are veterans and learned about other topics like saluting, proper respect for the flag, and the sacrifices veterans have made. Students also viewed a video on Veterans’ Day and completed packets which contained information about battlefield statistics and the history of Veterans’ Day. Pinney also urged, “Never settle for the bare minimum.  Always go above and beyond.”
