Hillsboro Elementary School needs your help for the 2010/11 school year!! Hillsboro Primary and Early Childhood Center is a Project MORE school, which uses community mentors to help children learn to read. Volunteers can be business people, senior citizens, junior/high school students, parents, etc.
Project MORE, Mentoring in Ohio for Reading Excellence, is a volunteer reading mentoring project based at the Putnam County Educational Service Center. It is designed to improve reading for students with disabilities and has demonstrated significantly improved reading results. Project MORE has also proven effective for students who are at risk for reading failure.
For nine consecutive years, independent evaluators from Bowling Green State University’s (BGSU) Center for Evaluation Services have validated that students who are 1:1 reading mentored perform better than students who receive only small group reading instruction. Project MORE is a scientifically based reading research (SBRR) program. Project MORE works with 140+ schools and partners with 10 colleges and universities for the 2009/10 school year.
Each project MORE student receives 30 minutes of mentoring four times per week. Hillsboro Primary and Early Childhood Center needs volunteers to work with students at least 30 minutes a day using engaging and fun materials. By volunteering 30 minutes a week, you will be helping a student improve his/her reading skills. Your personal attention can help a child gain the self-confidence he/she needs to become a better reader and also a better student.
