HHS Spanish classes participate in Dia de los Muertos projects

Spanish I and Spanish III students in Mr. Hector Santiago's classes at Hillsboro High School have created ofrendas (offerings) to honor the life of someone who is important to them during their Dia de los Muertos projects.

Students are studying Dia de los Muertos the "Day of the Dead," which is a holiday that is celebrated in Mexico between Oct. 31 and Nov. 2.

Dia de los Muertos is a celebration when the dearly departed return briefly to earth, to spend time with those they left behind. Celebrants make altars dedicated to the memory of the deceased, adorned with some of their favorite things.

The Mexican festival began before the arrival of the Spaniard conquerors, and was merged into the existing All Souls Day (Nov. 2).
